Suppose you make cars safer by requiring seat belts, collapsible stearing columns, and other changes that make it less likely that an auto accident will kill the car's occupants. The obvious conclusion, and the one many people reach, is that the highway death rate will go down. Sam Peltzman, in a classic article, pointed out that there was no good theoretical reason to expect that to happen. So making cars safer results in fewer deaths per accident but more accidents. Death rates per accident went down, the accident rate went up, and the annual death rate was about what it would have been without the changes. I was asked to introduce the after-breakfast speaker and to offer a prayer of hope for the future of First Baptist.

Robert S. Dannals, Rector of Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville, was the guest proclaimer in worship at First Baptist Church. Somehow in the wisdom of God and the foolishness of humankind, it happened to be the Sunday on which the congregation of First Baptist voted to call me to serve as its senior minister. It is a most fundamental text and sums up biblical teaching very succinctly for us. If you've never learned it off by heart then I suggest that you do. ' It really is full of good things. So let's consider this verse For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Then you would point out that the first word was a little word. In fact this verse contains two important little words For at the beginning and then in the second part of the sentence we have the word but. The first word reminds us that this follows on from what has gone before, the second that Paul is making a contrast - For on one hand the wages of sin is death but on the other hand the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Consider this little word For Let's consider this little word for then first and the context for the verse. Deputies and detectives took numerous reports of marine related thefts on Cudjoe Key, Big Pine Key and in Marathon recently. Numerous GPS units were stolen, as well as lower units from two motors. Most of the boats were docked in canals or on davits behind homes. The vessel burglaries took place on San Remo Drive, Cedar Drive, San Sebastian Drive, Malaga Lane and on San Marco Drive. Most were docked behind homes and had electronics stolen. Two outriggers were also stolen from one boat and another boat was missing two lower units.

The burglaries took place on Tortuga Lane, Legrand Lane, John Silver Lane, Jolly Roger Drive and Doubloon Lane.

Deputies took three vessel burglary reports in the Marathon area. Outdoor fun has been a huge theme on my blog this summer, probably because I've been spending as much time outside as possible. We may be halfway done with summer, but that just means that we still have half of the summer left to enjoy the sunshine! Beautiful weather makes me want to stay on the playground all day long, but I can only justify it if I can sneak in some of my lesson plan while we're outside. I just found some really fun ideas on Oriental Trading's website that kids and teachers are both sure to love. These are classics that every child should learn how to play and they can help children explore key concepts: Dominoes are a great way to work on counting and matching. These Giant Backyard Dominoes are easy for children to hold and manipulate, and the durable wood design is perfect for the playground. You can easily modify a game to meet the needs of the child that you are playing with. The children can play this game independently while you supervise the entire group. I was so excited to see this Backyard Letter Game! They are supposed to be for a Scrabble-type game but you could use them to spell names, beginning sound scavenger hunts, or letter recognition games.

If more long days outside are in your future, make sure to check out the rest of the Games and Activities available from Oriental Trading! While you're at it, catch up on some of my previous outdoor related posts: Easy Playground Storage Classic Playground Games Shady Spaces for your Playground.

The Bearded One and I spent the weekend taking beekeeping courses offered by the Tech Transfer team of the Ontario Beekeepers Association. Saturday was Introductory Beekeeping, Sunday was Integrated Pest Management. Gordon spent last bee season being my grunt labour, but this year he wanted to get his hands dirty. Of course, he started out with the ceremonial lip sting back in May!Here he is, all suited up and ready for action:He was promptly pooed on by some bees! The course was held at the Hector Dignard Blueberry Farm in Embrun. Bees crawling over the front of a hive, and hanging in a chain from the top entrance. The fruit was hard and green and the size of a large olive. I saw on on the ground that had started to turn red.

The stop off and rest birds are starting to show up at the feeders.

We hosted a Blue Jay convention yesterday morning.

I took this photo out the window. Later in the day the Goldfinches started to arrive. They remind me of bits of sunshine with wings.

The Orioles have arrived, but not in mass like last year… it is still early.

Grape jelly and oranges await them.

Really, what is up with my love of this picture or maybe it is the boy in the picture? I heart this. XOXO-. I have been looking at a lot of images of encaustic work recently and seeing some beautifully rendered pieces in galleries as well. So of course, I wanted to try it. Only thing is, living in a small town not many people are advertising encaustic workshops that I could attend. So I bought a book and I bought some damar resin and we picked up an old frying pan at a garage sale. Whilst in Portland, I bought some wax already mixed with damar resin and a pot of coloured encaustic wax as well. Slowly I was building up to it.

The weekend was bit misty and mizzly, so the time was right to head to the studio and play.

We would say goodbye in the morning and head off on our separate ways for the rest of the day, sometimes only spending time together on the weekends. For many years this worked for our marriage but these days we spend all day, every day together! We run a business together, co-parent together, homeschool together. and while we still love our alone time and still have our own identities and interests, we are around each other all the time. And let me tell you. We have an old door in our entryway that opens to the garage and I thought it would be fun to give it a colorful makeover by painting some simple but BOLD blocking!. So every time I say something about how Alice Waters is a wee bit smug or how green markets, while awesome, are not practical for everyone, or how occasionally food writing/blogging/obsessing is tiresome, some rabid foodie or other tries to tear me a new asshole, and I feel bad for awhile.

And then I read something like this, and I am reminded that Yes, I am fighting on the side of the angels.

If so - Dining Section today, below the fold. "Dinner at the Foodies'", it's called. HORRID stuff.

Barrett has had a similar policy in place for California since they banned Barrett’s.

Here is Ronnie Barrett’s open letter to New York State.

Barrett opposes those who are illegally disarming the American public from their efficient arms and creating superior armed elitist government agencies. By their deliberate and sinister actions, these officials now cause their state and local policing agencies to enforce these unconstitutional and illegal so called “laws. The farm is warming up this morning and the sun is out. Yesterday I was surrounded by good friends, gathering together just to catch up and celebrate spring.

In the evening, two other friends from the local Brewery came over to work on fiddle tunes.

It was what I needed, to be around supportive and bright people, talking and laughing. Fitting it happened on the Equinox, I suppose. My morning here will be all about office work, but around noon I plan on a good run and my work out routine, which I rely on like church these days. Fitness is the grounding element to what can seem like a messy situation.

What I have to deal with is manageable and will be dealt with, it just really overwhelms me sometimes, like waves building up and hitting a stone wall.

You need to catch your breath. Running helps me catch my breath. Controlling how strong my body is makes me feel stronger in mind and spirit, too.

This is a workshop for people who love the sounds and songs of the country fiddle and feel they could never learn.

It is for people who have never held a fiddle, can't read music, and feel they are too hopeless to even try. This is a war on coal, a war on jobs, a war on American families. Cheney is the elder daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and Second Lady Lynne Cheney. I have been watching a few Amish documentaries on You Tube while I've been ironing lately and it made me wonder why I enjoy watching them so much. I guess I'm inspired. Not by their lifestyle so much as by the way they work together. I love seeing that. It reminds me of days I've read about, a long time before the advent of supermarkets and department stores, when we use to work together as families, and in groups to get more difficult work done. When I see people working along side each other like that, it makes me want to join in. Yesterday's blueberry muffins.

I get a lot of mail from readers who regret they can't find anyone who shares their values.

Many of us feel the same because we live in towns and cities inhabited by people who are firmly and seemingly happily cemented into their mainstream lives.

They have no interest in learning life skills or in reducing their spending and consumption.

Just wanted to know if any of my readers have tried the GoPro Hero camera? I've always wanted something light, waterproof, and simple to use to take with me on my trips. The GoPro Hero would remedy that, but I just want to make sure that it's a good buy. " "If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool thoughts. By the time I get to the second square, I get the hang of it, by the fourth square I am little bored. I don't know if this is the way it will continue, it is after all, a mystery. The Groin and Channel are smaller today. Since there are separate units for the men and the women, we do not train together so it is difficult to determine how the women would handle themselves against the men. One afternoon a couple of the guys came over to where they were practicing. They were making jokes about us and how they didn’t think we needed to waste our time practicing. We all gathered around the guys and suggested we hold a little private match to settle once and for all whether the women could hold their own against the guys. At the beginning of February, I wrote about the profoundly heroic stand taken by Lt. " I said that Lt. " So part of what happened this past week is wonderful news:First Lt. US District Court Judge Benjamin Settle ruled the military cannot put Watada on trial a second time unless it can prove such a trial would not violate the US Constitution's prohibition against "double jeopardy. Yep, they are low-carb! For weeks now I’ve been wanting to experiment with making low-carb Pretzels! Maybe it’s the Oktoberfest atmosphere in the air! Anyway, I was pretty sure that actual pretzels would fall short because the larger the piece of dough making it, the more you run into textural problems and sometimes also flavor problems. But then I thought, what about Pretzel sticks? So experimenting I went, fully intending to bake the sticks until they were hard and crunchy. But much to my surprise, when the sticks came out of the oven after their first baking at a fairly light “pretzel state”, they tasted very much like actual Pretzels! Did they taste like real Bavarian Pretzels? No, but then I’m a Brezen snob, so it’s hard to get me to approve of even most high-carb Pretzels outside of Bavaria. They do however taste very close to my low-carb taste buds. Do NOT use a metal bowl! Glass is ok though! You need it to be wider than it’s deep so you can easily and quickly dip the dough. Wearing latex gloves and protective eye gear, add the pellets, stirring carefully with a metal spoon until the pellets are dissolved. They have a tendency to form this crystalized structure at the bottom. Bizarro is brought to you today by Family Entertainment. Not much to say about this cartoon today, feeling really low. Just thought of something to say about this cartoon. .
